On Friday, 28th February, 2025, the Scout and Guide Fellowship Ghana (SGF-Gh) organised a
solemn wreath-laying ceremony at the graveside of fallen hero, the late Sergeant Cornelius
Frederick Adjetey in Accra, in remembrance of his heroic role in Ghana’s history and as a call to
action for his proper recognition.
The event was held in collaboration with the family of the late Sergeant Cornelius Frederick
Adjetey

Historical Significance
Sergeant Cornelius Frederick Adjetey was one of three ex-servicemen—alongside Private
Odartey Lamptey and Corporal Attipoe—who were fatally shot on 28th February 1948 by British
colonial police during a peaceful protest. The veterans were marching to Osu Castle to demand
unpaid benefits. Their tragic deaths marked a pivotal moment in Ghana’s path to independence.

Call for National Recognition
President of SGF-Gh, Mr Andrew Botchway, delivered a heartfelt tribute during the ceremony,
appealing to the government to honour Sergeant Adjetey by either erecting a monument in his
name or naming a significant national landmark after him. He highlighted the injustice faced by
Sergeant Adjetey and his fellow ex-servicemen, who, despite risking their lives during World War
II, were denied the benefits rightfully due them.
He further called for the preservation of Sergeant Adjetey’s grave as a national heritage site,
suggesting it could serve as both a historical monument and tourist attraction.

Legacy Initiatives
To honour Sergeant Adjetey, SGF-Gh announced the formation of the Sergeant Adjetey Scout
Group in La, Accra. The group will serve as a platform to instil patriotism, service, and leadership
in young people.
Mr Botchwey encouraged families and the local community to enrol their children in the group,
underscoring SGF-Gh’s mission to use Scouting as a means of shaping responsible citizens.
Family Tribute
On behalf of the Adjetey family, the fallen hero’s grandson, Mr Cornelius Nii Laryea Okai Adjetey,
addressed the gathering. He praised his grandfather’s lasting legacy and called on the general
public, especially the youths to emulate his spirit of selflessness:
Conclusion
The ceremony was a poignant reminder of the sacrifices of Ghana’s forebears and the urgent
need to preserve their contributions. SGF-Gh reaffirms its commitment to honouring national
heroes and educating the younger generation about the importance of history, sacrifice, and
service.
